About

Hi there!

My name is Tim, I am an experienced (5+ years) machine learning engineer in the autonomous systems space, currently working on autonomous shipping at CaptainAI. In this capacity, I mostly develop and productionize ML models for perception (computer vision, radar), as well as building out the data platform. I have previously also worked with big data & analytics, doing for example time series forecasting and developing of cloud data warehouses and data pipelines. Over the years, I have learnt many many lessons from working in industry, both through experience and being mentored by others. The last 2 years I was involved in mentoring multiple ML engineers and learnt that that is a personal passion of mine, so I would love to see where I can help you advance your skills!

My preference is to tailor the lessons to what you want to learn and improve upon, the world is your oyster. If you are unsure what you would like to learn, here is a list of project ideas that we could work on for inspiration:

Build an ML Application:
* Develop an ML model by participating in an AICrowd or Kaggle competition.
* Optimize an existing ML model for faster inference with pytorch & onnxruntime.
* Build a REST API for your model and deploy it to AWS/GCP/Azure server(less).
* Setup a database and build a Dash dashboard around your ML model.
* Setup a vector search database with nearest neighbour search.

* Build out your home lab for MLOps / DevOps by setting up:
* A Gitlab/Github/Bitbucket account with CI/CD pipelines.
* A local Kubernetes cluster.
* Your own ML experiment tracker.

Other:
* Contribute to an open source project.
* Setup data pipeline infrastructure (Airflow, Prefect + database).

Again, feel free to fill it in as you like, suggestions are welcome.

Hope to see you!
Tim

At the end of last year, I sought out Tim to help me land a job as a Machine Learning Engineer. I had a background in data science but needed more experience on cloud and model deployment. He helped me with many things: - We settled on a project together to implement a tool based on LLMs and deploy the API on AWS EKS with Terraform and Kubernetes, and gave me weekly feedback on the progress and ideas for developing it further. - He recommended a certification as AWS Solution Architect Associate which I completed and helped land me the job. - He helped me craft my resume and make it much more relevant for recruiters. - He prepared me for interviews by doing mock interviews with me, both on the HR-type of questions "Describe a time where you had to learn something new in order to solve a problem", and for the technical round "Describe how you would implement a recommender system". He came prepared with challenging questions and really helped me step up my game in the interviews. I especially enjoy how hands-on he is: he is available for weekly meetings, and usually responds to any questions within a day. All-in-all, he is very knowledgeable especially when it comes to system design (Kubernetes, Database design, event-driven architectures, model deployment in the cloud). He made the path to landing my job much smoother, and I learned a ton from him. Highly recommended!

I booked resume review session. Tim spent time preparing ahead of the session (which not every mentor does!), and we discussed about the overall outcome we want from the resume, not just the technicality like re-phrasing some sentences etc. We also got to discuss some gaps I can fill in for my level of job. We will meet back again soon for another iteration :-), and also potentially about MLOps stuff.

Tim is a really hands-on mentor with a lot of industry practical tips in ML engineering. I like his approach of learning through well-structured project simple to complex concepts on top of each other. As a data scientist mentee , you’ll definitely go with Tim from notebooks to end-to-end ML application.
